About the Speaker:

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan in 1956. After graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1979, Dan studied under Fumihiko Maki in a postgraduate program. Completed his Master’s degree at the School of Architecture, Yale University in 1984.

Participated in creating the master plan for EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN. Against abandoning the environmentally-weighted original plan and reviving the land-leveling plan, by the government of Japan, after winning the bid, Dan harshly criticized conventional development methods in Japan and paved the way to preserving the Kaisho Forest.

Major Works: Sun Moon Lake Administration Office of Tourism Bureau , Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport terminal 1 redevelopment and Omotesando keyaki Bldg. , and others.

Lecture Synopsis:

The city as well as the natural environment is full of conflicts created on the boundaries between different patchworks.  Yet these conflicts evoke the emergence of the new relatedness between alienated fields.
"Mediation" is the only notion of today that could regard all those conflicts a positive energy to turn a harsh chaos into a more fruitful symbiosis.
